MDF or Medium Density Fibreboard is a factory made fibre board made from wood fibres bonded together with resin under high pressures. The finished material does not have a grain and is therefore ideal for painting or filling.
The major advantage of MDF is that once it is sealed (primed and painted), it is a very stable material, and unlike wood, is not prone to warping or shrinkage- extremely important when manufacturing large wardrobe doors, most of which are over 2m high. In a kitchen or bathroom environment where there are high moisture levels this is an important consideration.
Finally, all of our materials are sourced from manufacturers who use wood from sustainable forestation which means we are able to do what we can to help the environment.
The standard thickness for all doors is 18mm. This is in line with the kitchen industry and should match most doors that you currently have in your kitchen. It also enables the weight to be reduced compared to thicker alternatives reducing the load on the frame and hinges.
If you require something other than this please get in touch
For the shaker style design the dimension of the outer portion of the door is called the frame size. Inside this is the indented part of the door called the panel.
The standard frame options we supply are 85mm and 110mm outer frame size. We can however accommodate any size you required please get in touch if you want a different size. We recommend a minimum of 60mm in order to ensure that there is sufficient strength in the door and enough space to put hinge holes.
If you have doors that you are replacing measuring these is the best way to ensure the replacements will fit the same.
If this is not available the following can be used as a guide to ensure that the doors have the correct gap around the edges and where two doors meet:
For a single door Measure the width and subtract 3mm, Measurement the height and subtract 3mm
For a double door, measure the width and subtract 4.5mm (then divide by 2 to get the width of each door), Measure the height and subtract 3mm.
The aim is to get a 1.5-2mm gap around the edge of the door where it contacts a solid surface. If you wish to have a larger gap (to match other parts of the kitchen or for you personal style) then this is of course entirely up to you and should be incorporated into the measurements.
All measurements are +-1mm for doors up to 1.5mm in height and width and +-2mm for any sizes larger than this. Please incorporate these tolerences into your measurements to ensure the resulting doors will fit.
In order to make the frame and panel for the centre there is a minimum height and width of 250mm for all doors and drawer fronts. If they are smaller than this they will be made of solid MDF rather than the shaker style. This is the industry standard and wont look out of place when thinking about the look of the kitchen or project as a whole.
If you are installing doors under the stairs for example it is likely that you will require a door with an angled top. We are able to do this without a problem please get in touch with the sizes you require. You will need to provide the width along with height on the left and right side of the door.
You can order doors in the following finishes:
Plain, Primed (White primer), Fully finished in one of our standard colours, Fully finished in a custom colour of your choice.
MDF can be a challenging material to paint as it absorbs moisture from the paint and as a result can take a number of coats with sanding in between. Kitchens and bathrooms are also challenging environments and ensuring the finish is hard wearing and sealed from moisture ingress is important.
Having the doors primed by us ensures that they are fully sealed ready for you to paint and gives you the best possible start for your project.
Having the doors fully painted takes advantage of the high quality trade only paint finishes that we use which gives a moisture and chemical barrier to ensure the doors are long lasting. It is hand sprayed on to ensure you get a top quality finish.
Please ask for a sample of either primed or painted MDF if you want to see what it looks like.
